History of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

The history of the establishment of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) began in 1904 as a teacher technical school and was later promoted to a school in 1906. In 1942, it was upgraded to a college located on High Street (now Jalan Bandar) and later moved to Jalan Gurney (now Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra). In 1972, the Technical College was upgraded to the National Institute of Technology (ITK), and finally, on April 1st, 1975, it was upgraded to a university known as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

From 1977 to 1988, the Parliament Building in Kuala Lumpur served as the first location for the Convocation Ceremony, which then moved to the Putra World Trade Center. Since 1989, the ceremony has been held in the Great Hall of UTM Skudai, subsequently renamed the Sultan Iskandar Hall. On December 3, 1977, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia produced its first 65 graduates at its inaugural convocation. Almarhum Sultan Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim, the first Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, administered this inaugural degree.
